Contra Dance Band
Contra dancing is a popular form of community folk dancing that’s been done in New England for centuries. Contra dance *music* only has one real requirement: that you can contra dance to it! It can sound like Celtic, Quebecois, Old-time, Rock, Swing and more. In this group class, we’ll explore some important characteristics of contra dance choreography and how they relate different kinds of music. We’ll learn and arrange some tunes specifically for contra dancing. We’ll talk about working with callers and strategies for communicating on stage. Open to all instruments. Ideally you can play at least a few tunes at dance tempo and are familiar with what a contra dance is.
