Jazz Improvisation 2: Melody and Phrasing
This course focuses on the concept of phrasing: how to “carve out a line” and create a cohesive, melodic statement. The idea of phrasing is really about listening, so we will first learn one of the most important solos in the history of jazz: Lester Young’s famous solo on the standard “Lady Be Good,” and play it together. Internalizing this simple, beautifully constructed solo will provide us with a template to construct our own individual narratives. We will examine phrases by such jazz masters as Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, and guitarist Jimmy Raney.
This is a hands-on approach about melody and focused on jazz, but not a theory based course. A basic knowledge of major and minor scales is required. Open to all instruments.
