Applied Music Theory: Performance and Analysis

This course explores music theory through the context of music students are learning in their instrumental lessons. Students bring their solo pieces to class and together the class analyzes and discusses their form, tonality (i.e., modulations), harmony, nonharmonic tones, and distinctive motives and intervals. With this knowledge, students will not only learn and memorize pieces more easily and permanently, but they will also develop tools with which to create their own authentic interpretations. Students will apply their understanding to interpretation, experiment in performance, and receive/offer feedback from/to classmates.
There is no prerequisite theory knowledge needed to enroll in this course.
Students enrolled in full 16-week semester of Individual, Suzuki, or Mini-Group Lessons at UVMC may enroll in this class at no cost. Students will receive a 100% discount code when your lesson time for the semester is confirmed. Please contact the office at info@uvmusic.org for questions or to request the code in advance.
