1:00 pm Fiddle Workshop

We’ll take a fun approach in Bruce’s old time fiddle workshop and dig into a few tunes, first melody, then bowing, and then piecing things together.  It’s all about old-time music’s unique phrasing, rhythm and syncopation, intonation, etc.  Bruce will demonstrate some regional styles and tunings, too, but mostly we’ll be playing! 

Suggested experience level:  If you have at least a small repertoire and feel comfortable learning short phrases by ear, then you’ll be fine. No written music will be provided, so bring a recorder or smart phone. Please, do not post recordings on social media.

Join author and baker Martin Philip for a bread talk, short demonstration, and Q&A on all things baking.

2:30 pm Conversation and Q&A with Bruce and Martin

Join masters of fiddle and flour for a lively conversation on music making and bread baking, followed by Q&A.

3:30 pm Old Time Jam Session

All instruments welcome for an old-time jam led by Bruce, Martin, and special guest Annie McDougall on fiddle and banjo.

ABOUT BRUCE MOLSKY

Martin Philip is an acclaimed American baker, author, and educator best known for his influential work in the world of bread and baking. Annie McDougall (UVMC alum) is a fiddler, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist rooted in New England folk traditions and the wider American roots landscape. Known for her warm, lyrical fiddling and deep sense of groove, she moves fluidly between old-time, bluegrass, and original songcraft. Classically trained before finding her musical home in the folk world, Annie brings a grounded, generous presence to every stage she inhabits. She performs as a solo artist and collaborator across the Northeast and beyond, and is a founding member of the bluegrass-inflected trio All She Wrote and the groovy contradance band Here On The Hill.
