The Upper Valley Music Center and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center are thrilled to announce the creation The Aphasia Choir of the Upper Valley, a pilot program starting in September.
Around 2 million people in the US are impacted by aphasia, a language disorder caused by stroke or other traumatic brain injury. Research has shown that while those suffering from aphasia have difficulty speaking, some retain their ability to sing which can be a powerful tool in the rehabilitation of speech. Furthermore, group singing has been shown to increase social engagement, self-confidence and mood for people with aphasia and their caregivers.
The Aphasia Choir of the Upper Valley will be a singing ensemble for individuals who experience speech loss due to stroke or TBI, along with their caregivers. Led by Allison Pollard, a board-certified music therapist, this group will offer a supportive space for singing together and helping those who have trouble speaking find their voice through song.
“This ensemble has been one of my dreams since I started my career in music therapy,” Pollard said. “I’m beyond excited to get this program started and share the power of music with people who are struggling with speech.”
Music will be selected based on participant interests. There is no experience with singing required, although it is welcome. The rehearsals will culminate in an informal music-sharing event at the DHMC Lebanon Campus.
