Introduction to Harmony

Fall 2025: An Introduction to Harmony, and to Bach

Harmony—the relationships among chords—comprises the foundation of Western art music during the 18th and 19th centuries.  Harmony supports a sophisticated musical grammar; and that grammar grounds the unfolding of musical narrative in all music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

Johann Sebastian Bach brought tonal harmony to new levels of nuanced expression.  He revealed new possibilities, intricacies, and realms.  This course offers an introductory primer on musical harmony, using Bach’s music as guide and exemplar.  The course will begin with a review of scales, intervals, keys and triads, and then will move on to its main subject—the rudiments, and the subtleties, of tonal harmony.

Participants must be able to read music!  No prior experience in the study of music theory is required, though some would certainly be useful.  We will find out where participants are, and plunge in!

Students enrolled in full 16-week semester of Individual, Suzuki, or Mini-Group Lessons at UVMC may enroll in this class at no cost.
