African Percussion & Melody Ensemble

October 2025

This course will introduce participants to West African music polyrhythms through the balafon, a traditional African wooden xylophone. Participants will have the chance to play balafon and other percussion instruments including tension drums, barrel drums, cowbells, and shakers. No matter what mood you are in before the class, you will smile afterwards and you will be recharged by the positive energy of the music!

This course will be taught by Mamadou Diabate, an adjunct professor at Dartmouth College co-teaching with Dr. Laura McPherson (Linguistics) and Dr. Theodore Levin (Music). Diabate is an international award-winning balafon player from Burkina Faso who has toured the world with his ensemble, Mamadou Diabate & Percussion Mania.

Faculty: Guest Instructor Mamadou Diabate
Ages: 12 & Up or by permission
