Our teachers are among the best in the area and teach all ability levels from beginning to professional, as well as all ages, including children, adults, and seniors. Students enrolled in the Individual Lesson Program have the opportunity to perform in monthly studio recitals as well as in many concerts around the Upper Valley.
Students are encouraged to participate in group classes, workshops, and chamber music to develop musical teamwork skills (and also for the fun of making new musical friends – for both children and adults). Private lesson students of the appropriate level may enroll in a theory class at no additional cost. Students enrolled in multiple classes receive a 10% discount (e.g. lessons plus ensemble).
Piano Explorers
Piano Explorers is a gentle and curiosity-based introduction to piano for the littlest beginners. The goals are to nurture curiosity, joy, and confidence that you can succeed at the piano and share your music with others. Participation in Piano Explorers includes individual lessons with our Early Childhood Piano Teacher Joni Cushman, as well as occasional group classes and workshops.
Graduation readiness is based more on confidence and mastery of general lesson skills than on piano performance. Skills covered include a kit of practice tools and the belief that practicing makes things better, a memorized repertoire of 6-12 two-handed songs, a solid hand and body position that is relaxed and comfortable, and the ability to read and perform simple rhythm notations. Students will begin reading music depending on the child’s age and interest.
Note that the ability to sit still is NOT a prerequisite or a graduation requirement! Sitting still is overrated, and in this program children will alternate between piano and movement time. Piano Explorers will learn how to recognize their own wiggles, ask for a wiggle break, and come back ready to focus again.
