Reading Choral Music
Spring 2024: January 24-May 15
Fall 2023: September 13-January 10
If you sing in a chorus but have a difficult time reading the music, this class is for you! Learning to read choral music is equivalent in scope to reading a foreign language. However, once the basics of the “language” of music are learned, you can begin learning to read it! This class will cover the vast majority of musical notation and symbols you might encounter in your choral singing. Then, utilizing the research-backed Solfege (melodic) and Takadimi (rhythmic) systems, you will learn how to read your part in a choral score without having to rely on someone else to play your part! Each class will explore a new choral score, thereby learning the “language” of music by immersion, in the same way a person most efficiently learns a foreign language. And we will have a lot of fun doing it! Homework will be required in order to gain the full benefit of the class.
Length: 15 weeks, 1 hour classes
Cost: $225
Minimum/Maximum Enrollment: 6/30
Faculty: Annie Arrington and Will Ogmundson
Make-up: If needed, a make-up class will be offered on May 22.
