SUMMARY:Workshop: A Latin Orchestra with Body & Voice
DESCRIPTION:Join Rosi Amador for a hands-on celebration of Latin rhythms\, voice\, and collective sound. Discover the orchestra within!  You’ll explore… \n\nCuban salsa\, Afro-Puerto Rican bomba\, Afro-Uruguayan candombe\, Brazilian rhythm games\, and Venezuelan joropo\nPlayful vocal and body-percussion patterns woven with rhythmic improvisation\nHow to recreate the sounds of instruments\, including piano (drum)\, barril\, cua\, chico\, repique\, claves\, congas\, maracas\, campana (cowbell)\, and more\nVocal improvisation techniques from the beloved Brazilian troupe Música do Círculo\n\nIn this dynamic workshop\, Rosi Amador will guide you through select vocal percussion and improvisation techniques inspired by Caribbean and South American rhythms. You’ll embody the sounds of a Cuban salsa band\, a Puerto Rican bomba group\, and much more. No experience is necessary — just your voice\, your body\, and your curiosity. \nIn addition to improvisation\, participants will learn a song in the workshop which they are invited to sing along with the band in the evening concert.  \nAbout Rosi Amador:\nRosi Amador is a Puerto Rican/Argentine vocalist\, percussionist\, and educator with over 17 years of study in vocal improvisation and body percussion with world-renowned teachers\, including her primary mentor Rhiannon (a close collaborator of Bobby McFerrin). She attended Bobby McFerrin’s Circle Singing School in 2022 and also studied Latin vocal percussion with one of the founders of Vocal Sampling\, the groundbreaking Cuban ensemble known for recreating entire salsa bands using only the human voice. \nRosi cofounded her first Latin band with her husband Brian Amador in 1984. Together\, they founded Sol y Canto in 1994\, now celebrating its 31st anniversary. She regularly teaches this workshop across the United States\, Argentina\, Brazil\, and Spain. \nThis residency is supported in part by the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Couch Family Foundation.

SUMMARY:Sol y Canto Concert
DESCRIPTION:Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist\, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions\, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. In this concert\, Rosi and Brian will be joined by Queralt Giralt on cello/vocals\, Paul Lieberman on winds\, and Keala Kaumeheiwa on acoustic bass.  \nSol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic\, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance\, laugh\, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding\, intricate guitar playing\, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos\, and liberal use of vocal improvisation\, the duo often sounds like a much larger ensemble. \nSince 1994\, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the California World Music Festival\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, as well as countless club shows and house concerts. The Boston Globe hails them as “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition”. Music critic Norman Weinstein of the Christian Science Monitor and Boston Phoenix observes: \n“Every Sol y Canto album is a demonstration of what the poet Federico García Lorca identified as deep song. Always they evoke the sensual splendor of simply being vitally\, vividly alive in a magical and mysterious universe. Brian Amador is a Spanish modernist poet in the guise of a musician…Together\, Rosi and Brian Amador create a musical marriage made in heaven.” \nThis residency is supported in part by the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Couch Family Foundation.
