Preparing to Hear Masterworks: Haydn String Quartets
Tuesdays 1:30-3:30 pm
Franz Joseph Haydn is revered as a progenitor and master of the string quartet. In the course of his lengthy career, Haydn transformed a fledgling, inchoate genre into a sophisticated and central chamber-music form. In this four-week seminar, we will examine the evolution of Haydn’s craft, focusing on one example from each of four string-quartet sets—opp. 20, 33, 64, and 76. We will ponder, and savor, the remarkable inventiveness, daring, and wit which infuses these path-breaking compositions.
