SUMMARY:Colburn Park Trad Music Festival: Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Saturday workshops will give participants a chance to immerse themselves in musical traditions to learn tunes\, practice ensemble playing skills\, and perform together. Within each group\, faculty will teach tunes from the tradition by ear including melody and accompaniment. Instructors will coach each ensemble\, exploring stylistic approaches within the tradition\, and arranging a set for performance. Each group will have the opportunity to share what they’ve learned in a camp gathering.  \nOur Saturday workshops are open to everyone who wants to dive into learning and playing tunes together. All instruments are welcome\, and tunes will be taught by ear. Participants should be able to play a few tunes on their instrument already\, whether from the trad world or other styles. \nSaturday Workshop Schedule:\nSession 1: 10:00 – 11:15 am\nSession 2: 11:30 am – 12:45 pm\nSession 3: 2:00 – 3:15 pm \nSunday will feature a variety of sessions highlighting the many talents of our faculty\, including options for trad enthusiasts and newcomers. Examples include a harpers circle\, Irish tune jam session\, instrument petting zoo\, slow jam\, and song sharing. Sunday participants can pick and choose their path\, dropping into multiple sessions or focusing on one area. DESCRIPTION:UVMC Voice Faculty offer the very best tricks up their sleeves in this day-long workshop for singers. Sections will include Storytelling Through Performance\, Managing Performance Energy\, Vocal Health\, Musicianship for Singers\, as well as a supportive\, interactive masterclass to take all the new ideas for a test drive. Lunch and teatime snacks will be provided. \nWorkshops:\nUse Your Voice\, Don’t Lose Your Voice\, taught by Allison Pollard\nWhat actually happens when we sing\, and how can we support our voices to stay healthy and efficient? This session offers an accessible look at how the voice works\, including the basics of vocal fold function and practical ways to reduce strain and fatigue. Participants will experience and practice simple vocal health techniques and effective warm-ups designed to support ease\, flexibility\, and vocal longevity. \nTo Belt or Not to Belt\, taught by Julie Ness\nHave you ever wondered how to make that Broadway belt sound? Have you ever wondered if you should? In this workshop\, we will go over the process of learning a “techniqued” belt. I will share specific exercises and techniques to help you find your best belt sound. We will also discuss when and why to use this sound and find songs to help you practice. \nStorytelling Through Song\, taught by Jackie Pageau\nLearn what to do once you’ve learned the notes and words to elevate your performance. Follow a song learning and storytelling journey from start to finish while learning the practical steps that take a song from a beautiful melody to an emotional journey for you and your audience. \nMusicianship for Singers: Anatomy of a Song\, taught by Rose Hegele\nWhat makes a song tick? This session builds core musicianship skills for singers by digging into the anatomy of a song. Students will learn to analyze a piece both with and without sheet music\, training their ears to catch transitions\, changes in timbre\, and shifts in musical texture as they happen. We’ll explore how these structural cues aren’t just theory; they’re a roadmap for expressive choices\, helping singers shape phrasing\, dynamics\, and character with intention. No prior music theory experience required\, just curious ears! \nManaging Performance Energy\, taught by Jenny Pomeroy\nSweaty hands? Racing heartbeat? Forgetting the music? Everyone knows what it feels like to get the performance jitters\, and we all wish we could wave a magic wand and perform at the same level as our practice. Learn clinically-proven skills for how to get focused and stay focused\, practice for performance\, and sing your best no matter who is listening. No magic wands involved!
