SUMMARY:Workshop: A Latin Orchestra with Body & Voice
DESCRIPTION:Join Rosi Amador for a hands-on celebration of Latin rhythms\, voice\, and collective sound. Discover the orchestra within!  You’ll explore… \n\nCuban salsa\, Afro-Puerto Rican bomba\, Afro-Uruguayan candombe\, Brazilian rhythm games\, and Venezuelan joropo\nPlayful vocal and body-percussion patterns woven with rhythmic improvisation\nHow to recreate the sounds of instruments\, including piano (drum)\, barril\, cua\, chico\, repique\, claves\, congas\, maracas\, campana (cowbell)\, and more\nVocal improvisation techniques from the beloved Brazilian troupe Música do Círculo\n\nIn this dynamic workshop\, Rosi Amador will guide you through select vocal percussion and improvisation techniques inspired by Caribbean and South American rhythms. You’ll embody the sounds of a Cuban salsa band\, a Puerto Rican bomba group\, and much more. No experience is necessary — just your voice\, your body\, and your curiosity. \nIn addition to improvisation\, participants will learn a song in the workshop which they are invited to sing along with the band in the evening concert.  \nAbout Rosi Amador:\nRosi Amador is a Puerto Rican/Argentine vocalist\, percussionist\, and educator with over 17 years of study in vocal improvisation and body percussion with world-renowned teachers\, including her primary mentor Rhiannon (a close collaborator of Bobby McFerrin). She attended Bobby McFerrin’s Circle Singing School in 2022 and also studied Latin vocal percussion with one of the founders of Vocal Sampling\, the groundbreaking Cuban ensemble known for recreating entire salsa bands using only the human voice. \nRosi cofounded her first Latin band with her husband Brian Amador in 1984. Together\, they founded Sol y Canto in 1994\, now celebrating its 31st anniversary. She regularly teaches this workshop across the United States\, Argentina\, Brazil\, and Spain. \nThis residency is supported in part by the Couch Family Foundation\, and in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts\, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the six New England state arts agencies.

SUMMARY:Sol y Canto Concert
DESCRIPTION:Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist\, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions\, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. In this concert\, Rosi and Brian will be joined by Queralt Giralt on cello/vocals\, Paul Lieberman on winds\, and Keala Kaumeheiwa on acoustic bass.  \nSol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic\, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance\, laugh\, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding\, intricate guitar playing\, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos\, and liberal use of vocal improvisation\, the duo often sounds like a much larger ensemble. \nSince 1994\, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the California World Music Festival\, Boston’s Symphony Hall\, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, as well as countless club shows and house concerts. The Boston Globe hails them as “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition”. Music critic Norman Weinstein of the Christian Science Monitor and Boston Phoenix observes: \n“Every Sol y Canto album is a demonstration of what the poet Federico García Lorca identified as deep song. Always they evoke the sensual splendor of simply being vitally\, vividly alive in a magical and mysterious universe. Including works by award-winning Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi\, a world premiere by Broadway artist Cenovia Cummins (whose music can be heard in the hit Nora Ephron film Julie & Julia)\, a nod to the popular Studio Ghibli film music of Joe Hisaishi arranged by AHSQ violinist Jesse MacDonald\, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s timeless classic String Quartet in A Major Op. 18 No. 5\, this is a concert you won’t want to miss! Tell your friends! \nCalled “dashing and extraordinary” by The Strad Magazine\, the Apple Hill String Quartet are the Artistic Directors and resident musicians at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music\, winner of the CMAcclaim award from Chamber Music America. The Quartet serves as the Music Directors for Apple Hill’s Summer Chamber Music Workshop in Nelson\, New Hampshire\, known for cultivating connection among people of diverse backgrounds\, cultures\, and ages through its guiding philosophy\, Playing for Peace. \nDuring the regular concert season\, the Quartet performs concerts and conducts educational residencies locally in New Hampshire\, nationally in major U.S. cities\, and internationally around the globe. SUMMARY:Bal Folk Workshop & Dance with Jeremiah McLane\, Tim Cummings\, McKinley James & Mary Wesley
DESCRIPTION:Balfolk is a form of social folk dancing popular in northern and western Europe\, gaining popularity in the US. This event brings together masters of the musical and dance tradition from New England and Canada. \nIn the music workshop\, Jeremiah\, Tim and McKinley will introduce tunes typically included in a balfolk dance\, which includes bourree\, scottish\, waltz\, polka\, rigaudon and mazurka. Instrumentalists will learn tunes and have the opportunity to play along with the band for one set in the 6 pm dance. Mary Wesley will lead a dance workshop for anyone who wants an introduction to the moves before the dance.  \nAll are welcome to join in for a dance with music by Jeremiah McLane\, Tim Cummings\, McKinley James and calling by Mary Wesley. No partner or experience is needed to participate. Dances are accessible and easy to learn quickly\, with a variety of forms and energy levels that will keep dancers moving and smiling all evening!
