SUMMARY:Percussion Workshop with Sunny Jain
DESCRIPTION:Sunny Jain is a celebrated percussionist\, composer\, and band leader\, best known for founding Red Baraat\, a high-energy band that brings together bhangra\, hip-hop\, jazz\, and rock. In this participatory workshop for drummers and percussionists\, Sunny will introduce the South Asian rhythms. Participants will learn about Bols (syllables of North Indian drumming)\, improvisation\, and the role of dance in Punjabi music. UVMC will provide instruments as needed\, but please bring along a drum if you have your own (all type are welcome). Some percussion experience is encouraged. This workshop is presented in conjunction with his Hopkins Center performances April 14-16. \nThe career of Sunny Jain is a celebration of cultural diaspora: deep-rooted tradition that ripples outward\, changing—and being changed by—the cultures that it touches. He is a composer\, drummer\, dhol player and thought leader. Jain recently created his theatrical music memoir\, Love Force\, developed as an Artist-In-Residence and Visiting Scholar at Wesleyan University; and has been announced as a 2025 commissioned artist by NYC cultural pillar Soho Rep. His band and same-named album Wild Wild East (Smithsonian Folkways) has performed across the country to acclaim\, and can be found on the NPR Tiny Desk Concert series\, along with his seminal global party band\, Red Baraat. He also joined Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding\, The Musical\, as Music Producer\, and was the Music Director for The Jungle and for Lincoln Center’s 60th anniversary celebration.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of artist and artisan workshops!\n1:00 pm Fiddle Workshop\nWe’ll take a fun approach in Bruce’s old time fiddle workshop and dig into a few tunes\, first melody\, then bowing\, and then piecing things together.  It’s all about old-time music’s unique phrasing\, rhythm and syncopation\, intonation\, etc.  Bruce will demonstrate some regional styles and tunings\, too\, but mostly we’ll be playing!  \nSuggested experience level:  If you have at least a small repertoire and feel comfortable learning short phrases by ear\, then you’ll be fine. No written music will be provided\, so bring a recorder or smart phone. Please\, do not post recordings on social media. \n1:00 pm Bread Workshop\nJoin author and baker Martin Philip for a bread talk\, short demonstration\, and Q&A on all things baking. Martin will lead an engaging bread talk and live demo that blends craft\, science\, and story. He’ll cover the essentials of great bread\, from fermentation to shaping and baking\, demystifying sourdough and sharing practical tips along the way. DESCRIPTION:UVMC welcomes the Dover Quartet\, in conjunction with their Hopkins Center performance\, for a chamber music workshop. Small ensembles will receive private coaching with the ensemble members of the quartet. Space is limited\, and interested musicians can contact chambermusic@uvmusic.org to inquire about participating. \nNamed one of the greatest string quartets of the last 100 years by BBC Music Magazine and “the next Guarneri Quartet” by the Chicago Tribune\, the two-time Grammy-nominated Dover Quartet is one of the world’s most in-demand chamber ensembles. The group’s awards include a stunning sweep of all prizes at the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition\, grand and first prizes at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. Its honors include the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant\, Chamber Music America’s Cleveland Quartet Award and Lincoln Center’s Hunt Family Award. The Dover Quartet is the Penelope P. DESCRIPTION:Upper Valley Music Center’s Suzuki program presents the annual Suzuki Showcase concert featuring music from across the ocean. This concert features more than 100 students ages 3-18 performing on cello\, viola\, and violin\, plus special guest balafon master Mamadou Diabate as the culmination of an educational residency. The concert will bring together Mamadou Diabate’s tradition of West African music from his home country of Burkina Faso with other world music traditions\, classical repertoire\, and American fiddle tunes. This event is the culmination of UVMC’s Sing & Play Festival\, a celebration of music-making in our community.
